field camp week 2 – parowan gap

05/20/24 – 05/25/24

second week!! this was dr. bunds’ week, which I was nervous for because structural geology can be tricky, but I was also super excited because I love dr. bunds 🙂

originally, we were meeting monday morning and leaving to cedar city, but dr. bunds was sick, so we had an extra day to chill, and left tuesday instead 🙂 honestly, I think everyone was super grateful for the added time, because dan’s hw took forever! I watched bridgerton and was soooo lazy 🙂

day 1

we got everything ready at uvu, and didn’t actually leave until like 11! it was sweet!

ice cream on the drive from beaver creamery or something
my tent set-up 🙂
us cutting and taping our maps together! 4 pages worth!!
david photographing the moon
hayley cookin us some good food (I don’t remember what it was but I’m sure it was delicious)
  • steps: 8,388 = 4.1 miles

day 2

this was our first full day, and we spent it as a group with dr. bunds taking us through a lot of the mapping area, or at least a lot of the units in the mapping area! he gave us the units and their ages to start out with, which was reallllly nice to have.

we started in the navajo ss (jurassic) where the petroglyphs are! then the carmel (jurassic)

cooking 🙂
probably our best meal the entire time… I miss it
davidcore
  • steps: 16,528 = 8.0 miles

day 3

officially split into our groups! and we all gave ourselves/each other group names (this originated when we lost dan & split into groups)

  • me, emmaline, sarah – the three body problem
    • this name was given to us by dr. bunds, apparently because he thought we were chaotic lol
  • hayley and david – twisted ankle, I think
    • because hayley twisted her ankle??
  • dylan and parker – mesquitoes
    • dylan told a story about some ladies from NV in a club called mesquitoes or something??
pretty in the claron 🙂
classic
sunset! 🙂
  • steps: 17,327 = 8.4 miles

day 4

I was so tired at this point, but it was a COOL! DAY!

today we got to the straight cliffs and they were amazing!!! nearly 90 degree dip!!

!!!

I’m pretty sure this is the day that dr. bunds hiked with our group for a few hours, mostly walking the contact between the overlying parowan conglomerate and the underlying layers (straight cliffs, upper iron springs) it was really fun and helpful, and also veryyyy scrambly!!

idk parker digging a grave or something
  • steps: 17,900 = 8.6 miles

day 5

this was our last day mapping, and it was a full day!

pretty pretty straight cliffs!!

you know what, I think this was actually the day dr. bunds hiked with us!

it got a tiny bit rainy and windy!!

we went out to dinner with dr. bunds saturday night at a little local diner, and it was honestly kind of mid, but at the same time it was amazing

  • steps: 18,089 = 8.7 miles

final bunds hw

fast forwarding through time to after dr. toke’s week…

stories

gso: a few nights of the week we played cards (crap on your neighbor or scum), and it was a great time 🙂 one night we almosttt got dr. bunds to play with us, but he just watched and laughed at us instead lol. I wish I had a pic of our setup because we hung up lanterns above the picnic table and it was so cute!

grad school advice: 3 body problem talked to dr. bunds about grad school for a while, and it was cool 🙂 not a very good story, turns out

attack of the dog: a dog (german shepherd maybe?) started barking and running sort of at us/near us and emmaline got a little freaked out and used me as a shield lmao. sacrificed to the dog

veronica or vicky?: dr. bunds called me victoria or vanessa or something one morning & I called him out (jokingly) and he felt bad, but then then he started joking about calling me vicky instead lol. I believe he called us the three vickies at one point.

don’t dally in the claron!: one day we (3 body problem) were hiking through the claron taking strikes & dips, and I had texted dr. bunds to update him or something, and he told us not to dally in the claron!! we thought it was really funny, potentially because we also felt a little embarrassed for “dallying”

nyt we love you: we started playing wordle, connections, and strands as a group (sort of) this week!! dylan, hayley, and I found out that we all love playing the nyt games so we started kind of racing/just doing them at the same time. and eventually most everyone else joined in as well. it was more fun than it sounds, haha 🙂

this was from another day 🙂
