week 5 of field camp had an incredibly rocky start… I was very sick and lowkey felt like I was dying. I actually thought about staying home on monday because I felt so awful, but it just wouldn’t have worked. luckily, we just did day trips as opposed to camping! it ended up being a good week 🙂
day 1: slate canyon, cedar hills, lambert park
slate canyon was rough for me because I felt horrible, but Parker was very nice and supportive and Dr. Toke didn’t make me participate any more than I felt up to lol

cedar hills was fun because we went to the same location Parker and I’s geologic hazards class had gone and mapped a couple years prior, so we had an idea what was going on already

I was feeling better by the time we moved on to lambert park, thank god!!! we split up into groups for this part and went off to map

we found a well or outlet that we assumed was fed by the creek running nearby which would randomly spit out water. most of us stuck our heads under because it was SO HOT and it felt incredibleeeee

day 2: spanish fork canyon, diamond fork canyon
we walked around the southern side of the mouth of spanish fork canyon, specifically looking at bonneville shorelines, river terraces, and hillslope landforms.

after the morning at the mouth of spanish fork canyon, we drove up and into diamond fork canyon. we walked up and down alongside the river mapping floodplains! it was really fun.

we ended up in 2 groups again, which somehow always ended up the same groups…

but we met up with everyone a few times before the end 🙂

we also frolicked all together, but apparently wordpress will only allow me to insert a video if I upgrade to premium???? i hate this website

day 3: Bells Canyon
Parker and I drove together and met everyone else at the upper parking lot for bells canyon. bells canyon is a hike I have always hated for all time and eternity!!! but I didn’t know that there was a different trailhead which cut out the horrible first part of the hike, so I actually like it now 🙂

on our way up and once we reached the pond, we talked about glacial features and faults, then split into 3 groups, each with one person who had taken geomorphology, which was me, Parker, and David. I picked Hayley, which was really fun because we hadn’t worked together as much over the course of field camp!

we pretty much just hiked around trying to determine the number and locations of the faults and where to map moraines vs landslide deposits, etc.

at the end of the day, we took our classic pic with the professor of the week, but we finally remembered to take it while actually in the field!

and a couple extra pics 🙂

day 4: GIS day
I think we just met up in the GIS lab to work on some pre-field stuff, but I don’t think we actually went in the field. It’s kind of hard to remember, which is sad, since it was less than 6 months ago! (I am writing this on 11/21/24)

day 5: mercur
on friday we drove to mercur, which is on the other side of the oquirrh mountains, and broke off into groups to map the area. I’m sure you can guess what group I was in by now.

it was very pretty 🙂 AND WE FOUND A DOG!!! it was the saddest, skinniest little dog that seemed like it had been abandoned and was waiting for its owners to come back 😦 Dr. Toke ended up taking the dog to a vet while we hiked (I think? or maybe he changed his mind on that? I cannot remember for the life of me), and *spoiler alert* he ended up keeping her!!!!!!!! she looks so much happier now

we found some fossils…

we found some flowers…

we found some bugs…

at the end, we all looked at 1 or 2 other spots with Dr. Toke before heading back!

day 6: GIS/Lab day
this is my really ugly layout that I hated lmao, but it was actually a really fun day in the lab! and we got pizza (Dr. Toke paid for like more than half of it, which was too nice of him)

connections had our group name in it!!!

end of field camp!
I made a video and it is posted on youtube because I don’t have an upgraded enough plan to post it here, which is suuuuper annoying!
